BUNGALOW MODERN
This project sits on a quiet street in one of Austin’s oldest neighborhoods, just minutes from downtown, the famous bat bridge, and South Congress. Our clients had lived on the property for about five years and loved the sense of history imbued in the house. But there were issues that made everyday life difficult: a tiny 1930’s era kitchen, a master bath that was ‘pretty gross,’ and lack of quiet creative space.

With their program brief we determined they would roughly need to double the square footage of the house. But it was important to the owners that we didn’t end up with a house so over-scaled that the original spaces were no longer used.
Our concept for the addition was to mimic the volume of the bungalow with a new modern addition. Each element of the program was considered for desired levels of privacy and view to the street, resulting in a smart use of space at each corner of the site. A large storage wall runs through the house, serving to 'stitch' together old and new, while separating the bedrooms from the kitchen and dining areas.
The house is built for wheelchair accessibility to visitors and includes an earthen ramp to a side entrance.
